Our Heritage: Built on Passion, Powered by Community
Reigate Squash Club isn’t just a place to play — it’s a club built on vision, resilience and the enduring spirit of community.
Our roots trace back to the 1930s, when squash was a rare sight outside of London and elite schools. But one man, Lord Nugent, saw potential. A passionate advocate for spreading the sport, he helped spark the creation of new clubs across the South East — including, eventually, Reigate.
At the same time, Kenneth Brewer, a dedicated member of Reigate Tennis Club on Manor Road, found himself at the heart of a pivotal moment. The tennis club needed funds for a new hard court. Kenneth saw an opportunity — and struck a deal to sell a plot of land that would become the foundation for something new. With the support of four local benefactors and a bank loan, Reigate’s first two squash courts and changing rooms were built in 1936. The dream had begun.
Not long after, the outbreak of World War II brought everything to a halt. The club was requisitioned by the Canadian Army and repurposed for storage. Yet the passion never faded. After the war, the doors reopened, and by 1952, the freehold was in the hands of the Trustees. It took another decade to pay off the original loan — but the club’s future was secured.
The 1970s and ’80s marked a golden era. Two more courts were added, the membership grew, and Reigate began producing serious talent — including County and International players. Among them were juniors who rose to greatness: Danny Lee, now a pro at St. George’s, and Alison Malynn (née Cumings), who climbed the ranks to become World No. 4.
In 1993, thanks to a generous grant and the dedication of long-time member and Treasurer David Hodges, the club’s roof was replaced, and the bar was transformed — a fresh chapter for a club always moving forward.
Today, Reigate Squash Club remains what it has always been at its core: a member-led, community-driven space where passion for the game thrives. We are powered by volunteers, guided by our committee and trustees, and united by a love of squash and racket ball that stretches back nearly a century.
Our history isn’t just in the past — it’s in our DNA. And the next chapter? That’s where you come in.
